How to block Instagram Reels on iPhone

The short answer: Instagram has no setting that turns Reels off. On an iPhone you have four real options: use Instagram's "less of this" controls (weak), put a Screen Time limit on the whole app (blunt), use Instagram in Safari with a content blocker (fiddly), or use an app that shows Instagram with the Reels tab and feed removed (what FeedOff does, free). Here is what each one actually does.

1. Instagram's own settings

Instagram lets you mark individual Reels as "Not interested" and, under Settings → Content preferences, dial down "sensitive content" and mute specific words. None of this removes Reels. It changes what the algorithm shows you, and it resets in practice as soon as you watch a few. There is also no way to hide the Reels tab in the bottom bar. If you want the tab gone, Instagram won't do it for you.

2. Screen Time app limits

Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → add Instagram → set a daily allowance. This works, and it's built in, but it blocks all of Instagram: DMs, stories, your friends' posts, along with Reels. Most people tap "Ignore limit for 15 minutes" by day three. It's a good backstop, not a fix for Reels specifically.

3. Instagram in Safari with a content blocker

instagram.com works in Safari, and Safari content blockers (1Blocker, AdGuard and others) can hide page elements by CSS selector. Add rules for a[href="/reels/"] and a[href="/explore/"] and the tabs disappear. The downsides: you're maintaining selectors yourself when Instagram changes its layout, Safari on iPhone keeps prompting you to open the app, and there's nothing stopping you from just tapping the real Instagram icon.

4. An app that shows Instagram without Reels

This is the approach a handful of apps take, FeedOff included. The app opens the real instagram.com inside Apple's standard web view and hides the parts you don't want on your phone, the way a content blocker does, but with the rules maintained for you. DMs, stories, profiles, search and posting all keep working because it is the real site. The Reels tab, the Reels feed, Explore and suggested posts are gone.

What about a single Reel a friend sends you?
